Cut a pair of trousers at the knee and you get a pair of trousers that end at the knee. Not a pair of shorts. The rise, the thigh room, the inseam, the leg opening, the pocket angle. All of these change when the garment gets shorter. Get any one of them wrong and the shorts either ride up, bunch at the crotch, or make the pockets flare out.

Set the Rise, Length, and Waistband Before Sampling

The waistband decides how the shorts sit and how the size range holds up from S to 3XL.

Flat-front with belt loops, elastic waist, or drawstring. Each one changes the overall fit. A drawstring waist adds about 2cm to the front rise compared to a flat-front at the same measurements, because the drawstring channel needs room. Most brands don’t account for that and end up with a front that sags.

After the waistband type, we lock the rise, seat, thigh, inseam, and leg opening. We check these against the intended fit (relaxed, regular, slim) and the target customer’s build, not just a generic size chart. Pocket position matters too. On a 5-inch inseam, a pocket that sits too low hits the hem and pulls open. We catch that in the sample.

Pick the Fabric for How the Shorts Will Be Worn

A pair of chino shorts and a pair of gym shorts have nothing in common except the name. The fabric drives everything.

Cotton twill at 220-260gsm works for chinos and casual shorts. Holds a crease, sits flat in photos, works year-round. For athletic and outdoor shorts, woven polyester or nylon at 120-160gsm dries fast and weighs almost nothing. French terry at 280-320gsm is the standard for sweat shorts and streetwear. Linen blends work for resort and vacation lines but wrinkle fast, so they need to be blended with cotton or rayon to stay presentable.

Tell us the season, the price point, and what the shorts are for. We suggest fabric options and confirm the weight, hand feel, and opacity on the sample. Opacity matters more than people think. Lightweight shorts in pale colors can go see-through in sunlight if the fabric is too thin.

Place Branding Where It Actually Works on a Short

Shorts have less flat surface than a T-shirt. The usable branding spots are the waistband, the side seam, the back pocket area, the hem, and sometimes the thigh. Each one moves and stretches differently when worn, so what looks clean on a flat lay can look off on a body.

Small logos on the thigh or back pocket usually work best with embroidery or heat transfer. Larger prints on cargo pockets or the back panel can use screen printing or DTG, depending on the fabric. We check the artwork against the actual fabric swatch before recommending a method.

Pantone colors, logo dimensions, and exact placement all get confirmed before bulk. When you reorder, we pull the same spec and match it. If you need changes (new colorway, updated logo), we update the spec and confirm in a new sample first.
