Which City in China Is Best for Clothing Manufacturers?
There’s no single best city in China for clothing manufacturers. It depends on what you’re making. China’s garment industry is clustered by product type, and picking the wrong city for your product means slower turnaround, fewer fabric options, and higher costs.
Short version: Guangzhou and the surrounding Pearl River Delta region handles the widest range of casual and menswear categories. Shaoxing is strong for woven fabrics and formal wear. Quanzhou does sportswear. Dongguan covers everything from denim to outerwear. And then there are smaller clusters you’ve probably never heard of that dominate specific niches.
Guangzhou: The All-Rounder
Guangzhou is where we’re based, so yes, there’s some bias here. But the numbers back it up. Guangzhou is one of China’s largest garment export cities by volume, and there’s a reason for that.
The Zhongda Fabric Market (中大布匹市场) is about 20 minutes from our office. It’s the largest fabric wholesale market in China. Thousands of vendors selling everything from 180gsm cotton jersey to moisture-wicking polyester blends, plus trims, zippers, buttons, elastic bands, labels, and packaging materials. When a client asks “can you source a specific fabric?”, the answer is almost always yes, and we can usually get swatches within a day or two.
Guangzhou’s garment manufacturing covers t-shirts, polo shirts, hoodies, casual pants, shorts, light jackets, and team uniforms. The city also has dense clusters of screen printing, DTG printing, embroidery, and heat transfer facilities.
For international logistics, Guangzhou sits next to Baiyun International Airport and is close to Nansha Port, one of the busiest container ports in southern China. Getting goods from production floor to shipping dock is straightforward.
The Guangzhou ecosystem works particularly well for buyers who need custom menswear, team uniforms, and casual wear in quantities from a few hundred to several thousand pieces. The concentration of supporting services (fabric, trims, printing, embroidery) all within the same metropolitan area means faster sampling and fewer delays.
Dongguan: The Factory Floor of Guangdong
Dongguan sits about an hour east of Guangzhou by car. If Guangzhou is the commercial hub, Dongguan is the production powerhouse.
Large-scale garment factories are more common in Dongguan than in Guangzhou proper. The city has been a manufacturing center for decades, originally for shoes and electronics, then expanding into apparel. You’ll find factories here producing denim, outerwear, down jackets, and structured garments that require heavier machinery.
Dongguan tends to attract bigger orders. If you’re placing 5,000+ pieces, you might find competitive pricing here. For smaller runs under 1,000 pieces, Dongguan factories sometimes aren’t as interested unless you’re working with a product that matches their existing production lines.
Shaoxing: Where the Fabric Comes From
Shaoxing, in Zhejiang province, is China’s textile capital. The city produces a huge share of the country’s woven fabrics, including polyester, chiffon, lining materials, and suit-weight fabrics.
If you’re sourcing formal wear, blazers, dress pants, or anything that uses woven fabric, Shaoxing gives you direct access to the raw material supply chain. Manufacturers in this region often have integrated operations where the fabric mill and garment factory are closely linked, sometimes under the same company.
The trade-off: Shaoxing is less versatile for knit-based casual wear. If you need cotton jersey t-shirts or fleece hoodies, you’d be looking at Guangzhou or Dongguan instead.
Quanzhou and Jinjiang: Sportswear Territory
Quanzhou in Fujian province has built a strong reputation for sportswear and athletic apparel. Several major Chinese sportswear brands have their roots here, and the supply chain reflects that focus.
Factories in this cluster are set up for performance fabrics, compression wear, running shorts, gym tops, and similar athletic products. If your line is built around moisture-wicking, four-way stretch, or other technical fabrics, Quanzhou manufacturers will have the machinery and material sourcing dialed in.
One thing to note: Quanzhou’s sportswear cluster is heavily oriented toward the domestic Chinese market. Manufacturers who do export business exist, but you’ll need to look harder than in Guangzhou, where export-oriented operations are more common.
Zhongshan Shaxi: The Casual Pants Hub
This one surprises most overseas buyers. Zhongshan Shaxi (沙溪镇) is a small town in Guangdong, about 90 minutes south of Guangzhou. It’s one of China’s largest production bases for casual pants, including chinos, cargo pants, and men’s shorts.
We’ve sourced from Shaxi for clients who need specific pant styles. The town’s specialization means factories there have the pattern-making expertise, fabric access, and production efficiency for pants that a general-purpose factory in Guangzhou might not match.
Smaller Clusters Worth Knowing
Humen (虎门), Dongguan is known for women’s fast fashion. Not relevant if you’re doing menswear, but good to know if your product line ever expands.
Pinghu (平湖), Jiaxing specializes in down jackets and padded outerwear. Highly seasonal, but if that’s your product, Pinghu is where the expertise concentrates.
Shishi (石狮), Fujian focuses on men’s casual wear, particularly business casual and semi-formal pieces. Another Fujian cluster worth investigating for specific product categories.
How to Choose the Right City
Start with your product, not the city.
Write down exactly what you’re making. Fabric type (knit or woven?), product category, and order size. Then match those to the clusters above.
If you’re doing cotton or poly-blend casual menswear (t-shirts, polos, hoodies, joggers, shorts, team uniforms) in quantities from 100 to 10,000 pieces, the Guangzhou area gives you the most flexibility. You get access to the largest fabric market in the country, a mature network of printing and embroidery services, and manufacturers experienced with export orders to the US, Australia, UK, and Middle East.
For sportswear with technical fabrics, look at Quanzhou. For formal and woven garments, start with Shaoxing. For large-volume production runs, Dongguan.
And if you’re not sure? Ask the manufacturer. Any honest supplier will tell you if your product is a better fit for a different region. If they claim they can make everything perfectly regardless of what it is, that’s worth questioning.
