What Is the Website to Order Clothes from China?
People ask this question a lot, and the honest answer is: there’s no single website. The right platform depends on whether you’re buying ready-made stock in bulk, ordering custom-manufactured goods, or somewhere in between.
Here’s a breakdown of the main options, what each one is actually built for, and where they fall short.
Alibaba
Alibaba is the platform most overseas buyers think of first. It connects international buyers with Chinese suppliers across every product category imaginable.
For clothing, Alibaba works best as a discovery tool. You can search for suppliers by product type, filter by location and minimum order quantity, browse product catalogs, and send inquiries. The platform also offers Trade Assurance, which holds your payment in escrow until you confirm delivery.
Where Alibaba gets complicated: the sheer number of suppliers makes filtering difficult. A search for “men’s polo shirts” returns thousands of results, mixing actual manufacturers with trading companies, wholesalers, and resellers. The verification badges help somewhat, but “Verified Supplier” confirms the business is legally registered. It doesn’t confirm factory ownership or production quality.
The pricing on Alibaba listings is often directional, not final. Listed prices assume certain quantities, fabrics, and specifications that may not match what you actually need. Expect the real quote to come after a back-and-forth about your specific requirements.
Alibaba works well for: initial supplier discovery, comparing multiple options quickly, placing standard orders with Trade Assurance protection.
It’s less ideal for: fully custom orders where you need close collaboration on design, fabric selection, and sample revisions. That level of back-and-forth is better handled through direct communication with a manufacturer.
1688.com
1688 is Alibaba’s domestic Chinese platform. Same parent company, but the entire site is in Chinese and primarily serves the domestic Chinese market.
Why would an overseas buyer care about 1688? Prices. Because 1688 is designed for domestic wholesale, prices are typically 20-40% lower than Alibaba listings for similar products. Some overseas buyers use 1688 to find suppliers, then contact them separately for export orders.
The catch: the platform is entirely in Chinese. Navigation, communication, payment, and dispute resolution all happen in Chinese. If you don’t read Chinese or don’t have someone on your team who does, 1688 is difficult to use directly. Many buyers who source through 1688 work with a purchasing agent in China who handles the browsing, communication, and quality inspection.
Also worth knowing: 1688 is primarily a stock/ready-made goods platform. Most suppliers there sell existing products in bulk. If you need custom designs, custom fabrics, or branded packaging, you’ll typically need to move the conversation off-platform and negotiate those services separately.
Manufacturer Websites
Some Chinese clothing manufacturers have their own English-language websites with product catalogs, inquiry forms, and detailed information about their production capabilities.
The advantage of working through a manufacturer’s website: you’re dealing directly with the company that makes your clothes. No platform fees, no middleman markup, and communication tends to be more direct and detailed.
How to evaluate a manufacturer’s website: look at their product range (does it match what you need?), their content (does it sound like it was written by someone who knows the industry or like generic marketing copy?), their case studies or project examples, and their contact responsiveness. A manufacturer who invests in a proper website, real product photography, and genuine content is signaling that they take their export business seriously.
The downside: there’s no built-in payment protection like Alibaba’s Trade Assurance. Payment terms are negotiated directly, typically 50% deposit and 50% before shipment. This requires a degree of trust that’s built through the sampling process. That’s why ordering a sample before committing to a bulk order is non-negotiable when working directly with any manufacturer.
Sourcing Agents and Buying Offices
Not a website exactly, but worth mentioning because many overseas buyers, especially first-timers, use sourcing agents.
A sourcing agent is a person or company based in China who finds suppliers, manages communication, inspects quality, and handles logistics on your behalf. You tell them what you need, and they do the legwork. Good agents earn their fee by saving you from bad suppliers and bad products.
The economics: most agents charge either a commission (typically 5-10% of order value) or a flat service fee. The good ones pay for themselves by catching quality issues before shipment and negotiating better terms than you could get on your own as a new buyer.
Where it falls apart: the agent becomes your only window into the supply chain. If the relationship sours or the agent disappears (it happens), you may not even know which factory made your products.
DHgate, Taobao, and Retail Platforms
DHgate and Taobao show up in searches for ordering clothes from China, but they serve a different purpose. These are retail-oriented platforms for small-quantity purchases, often one to a few dozen pieces.
If you’re a brand, organization, or reseller looking to order 100 pieces or more of a custom product, these platforms aren’t the right tool. They’re designed for consumers buying existing products, not for custom manufacturing.
Which Option Fits Your Situation
You want to browse and compare many suppliers quickly: Start with Alibaba. Send inquiries to 5-10 suppliers, compare responses, and narrow down from there.
You already know what product category you need and want to work directly with a manufacturer: Search for manufacturer websites in your specific niche. Google searches like “custom [product type] manufacturer China” will surface companies with export-oriented sites.
You need someone on the ground in China to manage the whole process: Consider a sourcing agent, especially for your first order or if you’re ordering across multiple product categories.
You’re buying ready-made stock in bulk and you read Chinese (or have someone who does): 1688 offers the best domestic wholesale prices.
You need fewer than 50 pieces of an existing design: DHgate or Taobao. But at that quantity, you’re buying retail, not manufacturing.
